The Republican Party, American Conservatism, and Most Institutions of Evangelical Christianity Serve Satan

Yes, I sincerely mean that: the Republican Party, American conservatism, and most institutions of Evangelical Christianity do indeed serve Satan. I know it's incindiary, but sometimes the truth is.

Let's just assume that the Bible is right about God's values. What are those values? Justice and mercy. Either most of the Bible is wrong, or God is in all cases on the side of the poor and the oppressed, the powerless, the suffering - and anyone who truly serves God is on their side too. This is not complicated, and there are no exceptions in the entire Bible.

Satan, on the other hand, is on the side of power. He seeks power. He is motivated by hate. Anyone who is not on the side of the poor, the oppressed, the powerless, the widows, the orphans, the exiles - anyone who is on the side of power and oppression serves Satan.

So whose side is the Republican Party on? I don't necessarily mean ordinary Republican voters, I mean the Republican Party itself. Almost all its policies aim to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. It consistently tries to harm the poorest and least powerful people, not only within America but in the world as a whole. Look at its tax policies. Look at its healthcare policies. Look at its environmental policies. Look at its attempts to disenfranchise black voters.

Consider the passion with which these "family values" hypocrites support the destruction of families - black families through mass incarceration, Muslim families through war, Hispanic families through cruel anti-immigration policies, poor families through cruelly depriving them of healthcare or education or safe drinking water - the families of the poorest and most vulnerable through whatever means they can achieve most conveniently.

Even in the case of abortion, an issue where Republicans often portray themselves as standing up for the helpless and innocent, the actual policies they advocate - such as slut-shaming "abstinence only" education - actually harm poor women rather than prevent abortion. If they actually wanted to prevent abortion, they'd support policies that actually prevent abortion truthful sex education and helping poor women have access to birth control. Conservatives opposition to those policies shows that they are simply lying when they claim to be against abortion. The actual policies that they support and that they simply want to hurt poor women.

Nor is abortion the only issue on which conservatives are systematically dishonest. Climate change and evolution are two of the most egregious, but here is a partial list of RECENT conservative lies:

The father of these lies, as of all lies, is none other than Satan himself, and everyone who promotes these lies serves Satan, regardless of what they intend. If they intended good, they would not need to lie.

If passages like Matthew 25:31-46 are true, they will be damned along with him whom they serve:

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' And the king will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Those are the words of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, himself, and nothing that any preacher or theologian will ever say will cancel or override them.

None of this implies that the Democratic Party are the sheep in that passage. On the contrary, in almost every case, Democrats eagerly "compromise" with Satan's servants. On the side of the oppressor there is power, and Democrats want power too.

Is there no hope? Of course there is. By working for justice and mercy and love in our own lives, we can take back a little territory from Satan. We make a difference with our votes. We make a difference with our voices. We make a difference with all our actions. Every act of justice and mercy makes a difference, and if there is a just God, every act will get its reward. That is the Gospel, the "Good News."

There is also good news for people who have hitherto served Satan. You can repent! Contemplate Isaiah 1: 15-20:

When you stretch out your hands,
I will hide my eyes from you;
even though you make many prayers,
I will not listen;
your hands are full of blood.
Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean;
remove the evil of your doings
from before my eyes;
cease to do evil,
learn to do good;
seek justice,
rescue the oppressed,
defend the orphan,
plead for the widow.
Come now, let us argue it out,
says the Lord:
though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be like snow;
though they are red like crimson,
they shall become like wool.
If you are willing and obedient,
you shall eat the good of the land;
but if you refuse and rebel,
you shall be devoured by the sword;
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

We so often hear the part about "though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow" but we almost never hear the part about "cease to do evil, learn to do good, seek justice, rescue the oppressed." I actually cannot recall ever hearing any preacher quote any line like that in the entire Bible, without immediately negating it with some theological chicanery, but the Bible is full of lines like that. That tells you just about everything you need to know about our contemporary preachers. You'll read a thousand books of theology without finding a command to "cease to do evil, learn to do good, seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow." That tells you just about everything you need to know about "theology." We should very seriously contemplate what the Bible says about false prophets.

Let's read those great words again:

"Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean, remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good, seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow." Praise God! "But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." Praise God! And, "If you are willing and obedient," which in context explicitly means ceasing to do evil, seeking justice "you shall eat the good of the land."

No one who intends to serve the God of the Bible, the God revealed in Jesus Christ, can support the Republican Party or American conservatism. Anyone who supports those institutions serves Satan.

He has shown you, mortal, what is good and what the Lord requires of you: Only to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Amen!
